Pipeline root control used to be like “putting out fires” for the Ojai Valley Sanitary District, according to Collection System Operator Tom Hoftieg. Now that the district has implemented a systematic maintenance program using RootX, there are far fewer “fires” to put out.The district, which serves a population of about 20,000 in Ventura County, CA, has been using RootX for the past eight years. Pipes are scheduled for inspection and RootX treatment every year for the first two years, then every two years after that. Hofteig said the maintenance program has cut root intrusion to the point where the video inspections show some pipes are still root-free after two years.
It takes about three years to go through the 120 miles of pipe in the Ojai Valley system. Hofteig said the district uses about 1,600 pounds of RootX in a year. Mechanical root cutting is used only when necessary to prevent an impending blockage. Although crews still find an occasional large root mass, Hofteig said there are “far fewer blockages in the lines.” What’s more, he’s never had to invoke the RootX two-year guarantee for municipal applications.
